Water, major constituent
of the human body

On average, the adult human body is composed of 60% water.

This quantity is divided into two distinct zones

  • - within our cells
  • - outside our cells :
    • • in the space between our cells
    • • in our blood and other liquids of the body
  • This quantity of water contained in the body depends on age.

In infants, the water content (75%) is higher than in adults.
This percentage of water is decreases in the elderly person up to 50%.

  • This water content also varies with body composition (lean and fat
mass). The muscles contain more water than body fat.

What’s more, all of our vital organs contain different levels of water. The brain (73%), the lungs (83%), the heart (73%), the liver (71%) and the kidneys (79%) contain a higher amount of water than bones (31%).
